How to develop your research proposal for Griffith Aviation Research Paper

okay everybody welcome to the first presentation this presentation is about how to develop your research proposal for those of you under taking part one of seven 5:07 that’s the main task that you have for four part one over the next few weeks until the end of week eight you’ll be engaging with me in developing your research proposal and the board document for that is available at the learning griffith site okay this is basically a summary of what we are going to be looking at today I won’t engage right now with them but basically we will be covering the main parts of our research proposal in this presentation today the first thing that we need to decide is the research topic and if you guys look at the module that I have developed for you on learning and Griffith on how to choose a research topic you can have various reasons to choose one you might want to take advantage of your experience in aviation and develop some further knowledge about a particular area you might be keen on transition your career within aviation or you might even be coming from outside of the ocean you want to have knowledge in a specific area let’s say revenue management or fleet management and you can take advantage of your research to really know more not just about the topic but also eventually to know more about the networking of people that you mind up working in the future I mean this might be the people that you end up interviewing for your research you know that you better understand your topic so things that you need to consider you know what is the problem that you’re trying to solve you know what is the subject that you’re talking about now who is involved in that and who is impacted so that’s very important in terms of when you considering what sort of data do you need to collect and what is this scope so it’s very important that you are realist this is a project of 300 hours you’re not saving the world quite yet so be very mindful of very specific what you’re trying to understand when you do that it’s important that you narrow down your area of study you might be able to identify a few key words you might be that you’re looking at what are the reasons for roots domestic routes in Australia too to be suspended so some of the key words you might have our domestic air transport Australia and and route suspension so you’re gonna be using those keywords when you start looking at Google Scholar to find academic papers and then you can also use the library catalog and if you check the resources that I have provided on the first topic you will see a very interesting video there on differences that you have in terms of the various tools choose search for research material as part of your research proposal you also need to write the aims and objectives of your research paper the research aim is basically where in in one sentence you know you were stating broadly what is your topic about this is the the barbecue talk you know you are with mates and people ask you how’s your masters going and then you tell about the exciting things that you do in terms of research and in one line you’ll be saying well you know what I’m trying to understand how to what are the factors that contribute to the suspension of domestic routes in Australia short switch very objectives okay so that’s where you were you trying to do you know that’s your aspirations that you are that that’s like your dreams okay the very be very specific not several aims usually just one aim you might have a couple of aims but not something not more than there the objectives is then how you plan to accomplish this so you might want to look in terms of saying well in in in practical steps or tasks I want to interview airport managers and airline managers and understand according with the literature what are the factors that contribute the most so your main objective might be I’m undertaking a literature review on the factors for domestic error suspension our will undertaking interviews with key airport and airline managers and my third objective might be to analyze the results that I’m the data that I’m collecting how do I do a literature review and you require to write a literature review it’s about reading you know you have to collect 10 15 20 academic pieces of books or book chapters or journal articles for you to really start becoming aware of of your topic so reading is the key thing for the next few weeks don’t get frustrated don’t get anxious because it takes time for you to really develop through your reading and it’s not because we’re not we don’t have a timetable for this course that you should be engaged in 10 weeks 10 10 hours a week sorry in terms of your studies okay so what do you want is you and a narrow down your topic and make sure you’re familiar with the theories and methods apply to your topic okay what is the methodology of data collection I my way of defining methodologies metal is actually a Greek word is how you’re gonna walk through something so the methodology is your bridge between what has been done in the past which is the illiterate review and what do you be doing in the future which is your data analysis so how are you gonna collect data how are you going to structure work in a way that you can collect information and data and transforming it into something meaningful to your organization or to answer the the aims of your research in the time of internet in the time of free information having information is not enough and information is available to everybody the way we add value to our career in organizations is by making a meaningful use of the data that is available out there there are several ways that you can do your research you can do and I’m just highlighting two here one is a practical research you go into organization and really look at what is happening there and you want to answer a particular problem that exists out there in the field and in order to do that you might develop questionnaires or surveys or interviews of observe things or discuss in in focus groups for example or you might also be able to do a theoretical research you know there might be value in terms of learning for example what is the literature telling about human factors for example so there might be a contribution there as well so check the resources that are available learn near Griffith and there are many there you can also think about what sort of data are you collecting innovation we can have several you know we can use qualitative data to describe things usually through interviews or observing procedures you can develop qualitative data in analyzing you might also need quantitative data for example especially when you need to interview passengers or what is the perception of passengers in regards to the quality of service provided the airport so you might have you know 300 developed 300 surveys and collect the data which is to be a lot of quantitative data depending of the data that you might have secondary data you might have to do correlation or regression regression analysis and that’s where you develop your statistics you know skills as well and you also have the chance of doing meta-analysis as I suggest in my previous slide using a literature review and the taking literature review in a particular topic what are the formats that we have we we basically have two formats one is what we call research paper usually around 18 to 20,000 words the structure provider is the one there on the Left executive summary introduction application of theory in a basic terms that is collected and analyzing in and then our conclusions provided but it’s a very broad but at the same time the analysis is not necessarily very sophisticated and elaborated you also have an option of doing a 7,000 words on an article which some people might think that’s easier just because you have to write less but actually there are two things there one is that my experience of writing the writing concisely is is always a lot more difficult so that’s the challenge there the other thing is that in this option you have a lot of behind the scene of work that you need to do so it’s really if you are really really committed to do something that will develop solar a new knowledge or you applying a technique to come up with some new insights it’s lots of fun it’s probably a little bit more of work for students trying to pursue this Avenue I will make sure that you have a mentor that is one of our ongoing staff one of our permanent staff that have a little bit more experience with journal articles so you need to present very well your literature review a good work of mastering your literature review then considering the methodology a clearly step in terms of how you’re gonna use primary in or secondary data to answer your research aims and you need a section on debt analysis as well ethics application you if you’re collecting primary data where other people are involved you need ethics application obviously if you’re doing with animals you also need ethics application but that’s very rare in aviation field anyhow there’s a lot of informations in this URL that I’m making available for you and you have to make sure that your mentor is is the applicant in this process with you the resources there are many starting with the Tom Harris book writing human factors research paper I fully recommend all of you to have and read there are other resources that I’m also listing in this slide obviously the main one is the Griffith University library catalog the resources that I’m making available and there are a number of them at learning at Griffith other research methods books that you might want to come across or even websites that were developed by other universities the submission of your proposal it’s done in April so forget about that April 2014 forum I have developed a new one in June that’s the most updated one is available on the website all parts have to be completed you need a list of academic references and when you’re submitting to me your final draft you also send me a CV or a resume because when I send in your proposal to your mentor it helps a lot if he or she has access to your CV or resume just you have a better understanding of who you are from the professional point of view once I assign you a mentor you communicated with your mentor stray away and then you stopped in with me in terms of this course sometimes there are changes in the proposal as long as the mentor is happy there’s no problem whatsoever you just send me then you then you version and I’ll make sure that I’ll put in in my folder and and you keep going with your research okay so yeah start working on your research as soon as you can there’s no no time for us to be wasting here

The Admissions Essay: What NOT to Say

hey it’s angel with Harvard in hardship or the past academic excellence shouldn’t be a secret this week we’re going to talk about what not to talk about in your admissions essay or what is known in law school in law school applications as the personal statement and it was inspired by myth living like Lucia forgive me if I’ve mispronounced your name but she’s on YouTube and she just asked me to talk about this so we are going to jump right in number one do not make excuses so I know in the first video I did it was a while ago it was like how I got into Harvard Law School the personal statement or something to that effect and even when I consult and counsel my current students or clients about what to put in their admissions essays in their personal statements I use the strategy to take the weak area of your application and flip it so I use that strategy to talk about that and reframe how the admissions how the admissions committee sees you however there’s a fine line between talking about your week that week areas of your application and making excuses for it so for instance some common issues are low GPA or a low standardized test score or a bad semester or maybe you’ve gotten gone on academic probation or like actual involvement in the criminal legal system or something of that nature so whatever the case may be there’s different different weaknesses or different insecurities that people have about their college or their law school applications and so I encourage people and I show them how to flip that to their advantage however what you don’t want to do is just to use your personal statement and say my GPA is low but I was going through a really traumatic traumatic event in my life like it can’t be that simple and clear-cut like it can’t be that blunt or direct because at that it just looks like you’re making an excuse for your low GPA however the way it does require this is a bit more of an art than a science so it does require a bit of a little bit of skill but typically what I do is I encourage my students and my clients to instead of just making an excuse you flip that weakness or you flip that insecurity about your application by pulling out what you learned from it so talk about what you learned from your mistake or how you overcame it or you know what good came out of it there’s um a scripture that says all things work together for the good of those who love God and who are called according to his purpose and so definitely I’m not saying I mean if you want to but I’m done I don’t tell my clients to put that in their personal statement that’s not what I’m saying or in their college admissions essay that’s not what I’m saying I’m saying that’s just kind of the theory if you will behind how you can flip a weakness and and make sure that it’s not just making and make sure that when you talk about your weakness in your personal statement that you’re not just giving an excuse but you’re pulling the good out of it and what you learned and how you overcame and you talked about that so for practical instance I wish and so in my personal statement and I was going to say I wish I could I can’t just like read it to you on the vlog because that would just be boring and take too long but it’s in the book Harvard in hardship but so in my personal statement I talked about Teach for America and so that was my story I thought I was gonna go to Teach for America and I would be like this bright and shining star and then encourage these kids kids and mentor these kids and be like hey you know I came from a low-income background like you would come from a similar ethnic background and look I went to college like I thought I was going to be like that type of like motivational encouragement to the students and it didn’t work out like I felt that it miserably it’s all in the book but so I used I talked about that and my personal statement and my law school personal statement and I didn’t say I felt that Teach for America because I didn’t have the support I needed and I Teach for America didn’t do this and oh yeah and I didn’t do this and the teacher like I didn’t make excuses but instead I flipped it by saying you know even though I felt at that area in my life look I was able to use some of the learning the teaching techniques that I learned at Teach for America and apply those to my family members who were struggling academically another way that I flipped it and I did all of this within the to the the two page requirement or the two page maximum I also said yeah I felt that Teach for America but hey I also I learned as a result of that failure you know that things in life happened and that you still have to keep pushing and so that’s just a practical example of how not to make excuses but to you if you’re going to talk about the weak areas of your application in your personal statement to flip it and talk about the good and talk about how you overcame number two don’t let on to the fact that hey I’m applying to a lot of colleges and this really isn’t the college that I want to attend or this is just my fallback school like don’t do that I know you know maybe one one way you may be thinking of that is like oh if I let them know that they’ll want to take me because they’ll know that you know I can get into any school that I want to get into know like they can see your numbers they can see how competitive you are you don’t have to clue them in on hey I’m a I’m applying to a lot of different other colleges as well don’t do that it will leave a bad taste in their mouth you come off as arrogant and and prideful and you know admissions readers are people like yes they’re looking at the quantitative factors like your GPA and LSAT score LSAT or SAT or a CT or whatever standardized test GRE that you had to take but they’re people and you don’t want to come off as obnoxious so don’t say that or say anything like that in your admissions essay or your personal statement and just very quickly I remember and I think I told the story before or I might I may have wrote about it in one of my blogs on Harvard and hardship but I remember I was sitting at lunch talk and this one was hosted by the Dean of Harvard Law School admissions and some kind of way it came up that someone had put in their application to Harvard Law School in their personal statement something to the effect of you know being admitted into a school like Yale Law School but they were applying to Harvard Law School and to make a long story short was very clear that she was offended she was like because when she said that that student had did that of course she didn’t mention the student’s name she was just giving an anecdotal advice and everyone was like oh like it was just this collective like oh my goodness I can’t believe you did that and she was just like yeah and I made it easier for that person to get into Yale so of course she was giving that advice in the context of you know being careful about submitting your applications and making sure you’re sending the right application to the right school but it also applies so this one like if if that offends an admission officer and she in like that was someone who you know I’m pretty sure she knew that it was a mistake and that that person just mistakenly sent their Yale application materials to Harvard how much more offensive would it be to put in your admissions essay or your a personal statement oh yeah I’m also applying to Stanford and yell or this state school in that state school you know so it’s offensive so don’t don’t don’t let onto that and number three is more so more so geared towards law school or even like medical school or what have you but don’t mention that law school is just a fallback for you even if it’s true so I know that some people especially liberal arts majors go to law school because it’s like that’s just what you do I don’t want it I’m not good at math and science I’m not gonna go to med school I don’t want to get a PhD you know law I won’t be I’ll be a lawyer that’s good like the best professional route for me don’t let them know that don’t say that don’t say something to the effect of the only reason I applied to law school is because I did really well on the LSAT no like I know you know there may be an inclination there to kind of your own horn and you know let them know that I did good on the LSAT you want me but you don’t have to do that like if you’ve done well on the LSAT they have eyes okay they can see that you did well you don’t have to toot your own horn in that manner because if you do that what they might do is give your seats to someone who is applying to law school because they really want to be there whereas your personal statement is saying I’m just applying to law school because I did welcome the LSAT someone else’s personal statement is gonna say I’m applying to law school because I want to make a difference in my community because I want to serve the government because I have all of these innovative business ideas and strategies and I want to learn the legalities behind them so that’s what you’ll be competing with I do want to give a quick ha VI if you do say something to the effect of you know I I originally only applied to law school because I did well on the LSAT if you do mention that you need to round it off real quick and let them know that you had some kind of epiphany or you had some kind of change of heart or you know something traumatic traumatic has kind of a negative connotation so maybe something traumatic or life-changing or something even good happen to you that brought that helped you to see the the usefulness of obtaining a law degree so if you’re going to say that you need to flip it and flip it really well and like cancel out what you just said but that’s difficult to do it can be done but I would just suggest just not mentioning that don’t do it at all and so those are my three tips for what not to say or do on your admissions essay or your law school personal statement if you need just more one-on-one guidance through the college or law school admissions process be sure to check Advanced Microsoft Word — Formatting Your Document

in this advanced Microsoft Word tutorial I’m gonna show you some of the most important and powerful formatting options in Microsoft Word a few weeks ago I posted my beginner’s guide to Microsoft Word and ever since I did that people have been asking for more Microsoft Word tutorials and so I’ve decided to release a series of intermediate word tutorials and also advanced Microsoft Word tutorials and this is an example of an advanced Microsoft Word tutorial but please watch for my other Microsoft Word tutorials as well so as I said the topic of this particular video is on the formatting options in Word and you can see here that I have a sample essay that I would like to format a little bit better a little bit differently and I think the first thing that you need to know about formatting documents in Word is the importance of this little button here this is the show/hide paragraph marks button and you can find it on the Home tab and ribbon and in the paragraph group there it is and you click on it and what it does is if it’s selected it shows you the underlying formatting that is happening in Microsoft Word and so these symbols that have appeared they’re not visible in my document really but they are the underlying formatting that’s happening and so each time I see this particular symbol that means that it’s a new paragraph when this document was created I hit return and every time I hit return it put in one of those paragraph symbols and most people use word with this turned off and that’s fine you can do that but I do think it is helpful from time to time to see what is actually happening in your Word document with regards to formatting so now that that’s turned on let’s look at some of the ways that I can format this document and let’s say that I would like to have on page two a list of adolescent literature that I recommend and I would like that list to show up right at the top of page two well there’s a couple of ways I could do that I could go down to the bottom of page one for example click and then I could just tap return or enter on the keyboard and I could just press and hold that even and push the rest of my text onto P age three and so now if you look at page two I have a completely blank document on which I can create my list of recommended adolescent literature so that is acceptable I could do that and it would work and I think it would look nice but notice the formatting each of those symbols is a new paragraph there has got to be a better way to do this also what’s gonna happen when I start entering my list of adolescent literature for example the book of three Ender’s Game The Hobbit as I enter these look what’s happening to the text below it’s pushing down my third page of text now you might say that’s okay I can just delete some of these paragraph symbols and that’s true if I do that look what’s happened it’s solved that issue it’s pulled the text back up but there really is a better way to do what I’ve just done so I’m gonna cut this list here of adolescent literature and I’m going to get rid of all of those paragraph symbols in word instead of hitting Enter or return a dozen times to create the space that you need there is a better way to accomplish what I want so what I want to do is go down to the top of page two this is where I’d like the list of adolescent literature that I recommend to appear so I’m just going to tap return or enter to provide a little bit of space there and then I’ll paste in or type in my list of adolescent literature give me a minute to finish my list and then I’ll resume the video okay so there’s my list a pretty good list of some books that I highly recommend for adolescent readers so now that I’ve got my list there what I would like to do is I would like to push the rest of this text onto page three now you may not want to do that but in my case yes that’s what I want to do the best way to do that instead of hitting return 26 times all I have to do is underneath my list here I can just go into the Layout tab and click in the page setup group click on breaks and choose page break and look what that did yet put in a line here a page break line but that’s only visible because I have this show paragraph marks button turned on so if I turn that off the page break line disappears but that page brakeline does is it pushes all the rest of the text down to the next page now if I wanted to add another book to the list notice that yes it does push the page break line down a little bit but it’s not affecting page three I could add several more items to the list page three is still where I want it to be so I hope that you see the advantages to using page breaks instead of just hitting Enter a few times now instead of page breaks some people prefer section breaks if you go here to layout breaks you can choose section breaks next page and it works very similarly but with section breaks what happens is it designates this next page as a completely separate section of my document and I could create another section break at the bottom of the page so I’ll do that next page and the nice thing about section breaks is that now that I’ve established them I could have different margin sizes inside of this section okay so i’ve just adjusted the margin and let me do that even more drastically so these are very narrow margins but notice up here in the first part of my document it did not change the margins why because that’s a different section of my document and below the section that I just established look the margins were not affected there either and this is also true of numbering if you have a numbering system within the section that will work but once you get outside the section the numbering will restart so to summarize page breaks and section breaks both work pretty similarly but section breaks have an additional advantage that you can set off a part of the document as a separate section and then you can change the margins you can change the numbering and you can even change the orientation of one section of your document will look at orientation in a minute okay I’m gonna go back up to page two and my list of recommended novels and I’m gonna clean that up a little bit and let’s say that I want this list of books to take up less space on the page instead of just one long list why not have it be half the size I can have half the list here at the left and half the list here on the right well there’s a couple of different ways I could do that but one of the easiest is to click and drag and highlight the list of novels in this case and I could click here on breaks and do columns that way but I’m just gonna go here to the columns button and I’ll click how many columns I would like how about two and look what it does it splits it in half and puts them in two pretty equal columns notice what’s happening here though the title of this book doesn’t quite fit in the columns as they were created so I’m gonna undo that just to show you another option that we have with columns you can go down here to the bottom where it says more columns and then decide at that point oh I would like two columns column number one I would like to be two-point-eight width and notice as I shrink that it’s also changing the column width before column number two that’s because of this check mark equal column width so I can uncheck that and now I could have the second column actually be wider than the first column you can also adjust the spacing if you need to and if you want you can have a line between them notice that it’s applying it to selected text but if you prefer you can apply it to selected sections or the whole document then just click OK and it changed how my text appears on the screen I’m still not thrilled with how that looks so I’m going to highlight the text try it again more columns and let’s see if I can get all the text the way I want it now all of the titles fit in the spaces provided really quickly there’s a few other options I want to point out in this video in addition to page breaks and columns notice that you also have line numbers if you would like you can number the lines and to show this best I’m gonna go back up to page one but here in page one if I select line numbers continuous notice that it does exactly what you would think it numbers the lines it’s great for poetry etc but I’m gonna undo that in this case another couple of things I’d like to point out notice that you can change the size of the paper eight-and-a-half by eleven is what you typically want but if you really wanted to you could format your document to be executive size or any of those other sizes listed here like legal I’m gonna stick with letter next to that we have orientation this is a simple but very important formatting feature that everyone needs to know about by default your word document is going to be in portrait orientation but you can switch it to landscape if you would like to have a wider document instead of a longer document I’m gonna switch it back to portrait and then finally we have margins and I showed this a little bit earlier but if you click on margins you can adjust the amount of space between the edge of the document and the text here at the left and also here on the right as well as the top and bottom of each page so those margin options are listed here you can also do custom margins and whatever you choose will affect your whole document unless you are using sections if you’ve set up sections like I did it will affect
